how to control naturally curly hair...

Take a deep breath. It's about to get better. Having naturally curly hair doesn't have to feel like a curse anymore. There are a few tricks and products that will make your life a little easier whether you're a guy or a gal. Let's start with the hair-care products you're using at home. This is the first place I see mistakes happen. Generally you want to use something specifically for curly hair. We use the Bumble and bumble curl conscious line, which is specifically designed for naturally curly hair. Every product in this line has transglutaminase, a patent-pending technology that enhances your curls. It's so cool. The more you use it, the better your curls will get.

The great thing about this line is there are two ways to combine the cleansing system. If you want to make your hair curlier, you should use the shampoo and conditioner every day. If you want to loosen tight curls, you should use the shampoo and nourishing masque every day. When using this combination, you won't have to follow the directions on the masque. You should use it just like you would a conditioner, applying it after your shampoo and leaving it on for a few minutes while you are finishing your shower (every few weeks you can leave it on longer with a hot towel wrapped around your hair or a plastic cap to keep in body heat as the directions advise). Don't forget to continue deep cleansing your hair once a week with Bb. sunday or tonic as advised on our "how to have amazing hair" page.

Before you get out of the shower, shake your hair out vigorously with your hands to get some extra moisture out. When you get out of the shower, instead of moving the towel in a rubbing motion over your hair which causes frizzies, you should use the press and squeeze movement. This seems like it's so insignificant it wouldn't make a difference, but once you start you'll see the proof for yourself. Another thing to avoid with naturally curly hair is combing or brushing your hair when you will be wearing it curly. Doing this only causes your hair to do bad things like frizz or totally misbehave. So even though you are tempted to comb it out once you have done the press and squeeze, take our advice - don't do it. Similarly, avoid sleeping on wet hair as doing so can make it to frizzy and harder to handle unless you use Bb. curl conscious reactivating mist in the morning.

Now it's time to think about a foundation product. Most naturally curly people will use Bb. tonic lotion to soften hair. Apply liberally from roots to ends. Next use either Bb. defining creme (to tighten curls) or calming creme (to loosens curls) in the curl conscious line. If you want to add more hold, you can combine either of these with Bb. gel or styling creme. Since you aren't combing it into place, just shake your hair around and put it where you want it to lay.

Having had curly hair all of my life, I know that the best way to dry curly hair is by letting it air dry. This can't always be done especially when it's cold outside. When needed, you can use a blow-dryer on low speed and medium heat to dry your hair. Keep your hands out of your hair. The less you touch, the better it will look. When you get to the top, keep volume by leaning forward and droping your head. Put your blow-dryer with diffuser attachment into your hair, working from the ends of your hair to the root.

It's best to not over dry your hair. Stop at about 90 to 95% dry. At this time you can apply your finishing products. Everyone has different favorites. Let your stylist guide you to which one will best suit your needs. Some finishing products work to provide humidity protection while some are reactive to moisture and will make your hair even better. Since we live in the South, humidity is an issue. Make sure you are choosing the right Bumble and bumble product for the right season here.

*The recommendations advised above are for someone with medium curl and medium density. You will always get the best advice from your hair a go-go stylist when you are in the salon.

if your hair is less curly or dense-use Bb. curl conscious shampoo & conditioner; use prep as your foundation for a little extra texture; apply Bb. curl conscious holding foam as directed; finish with a dime size of curl conscious defining creme to defrizz and soften.

if you want to flatten out your poofy curls-alternate with Bb. creme de coco shampoo & conditioner and curl conscious shampoo & masque; before foundation of tonic, use the Bb. wear and care quenching complex from mid to ends; for styling, use calming creme and after your hair dries apply again to control any frizzies.

finishing products that activate when it's humid-use Bb. grooming creme or brilliantine

finishing products that repel humidity-Bb. defrizz, does it all, spray de mode & holding spray

your new best friend on day two or three to make your curls look new-Bb. curl conscious reactivating mist (it does have some hold; to soften apply calming or defining creme on top)
